There’s something about the crisp air of autumn – just around the corner – that gets us in the mood to exercise.

Perhaps the summer was one long party – when you (we?) enjoyed a few too many barbecues or get-togethers, loading up on everything from s’mores to sugary cocktails…

Well, somehow, exercising outdoors when it’s not 100 degrees and terribly humid seems to have great appeal.

According to WebMD, fall is actually the optimum time to kick-start a fitness program.

Locally, as Beth Chamberlin and Peter Roy, co- owner of Nyack Boot Camp, say, "there are 3 great reasons why September is the perfect time to start exercising again.

1. With school back in session you have more time for yourself
2. The cooler temperatures are perfect for working out
3. You have about 3 months to get your body ready for all those Thanksgiving to New Year's calories."

All we know is we’re ready to lace up our walking (or running shoes) and hit the local parks, paths along the river or even our closest high-school track.

We’ve also got a great way for you to commit to your new plan – join the Maria Luisa effort as our ML Faves for Good initiative takes part in another event in coming weeks.

If you haven’t heard, we’ll be following up our inspiring participation in the Women’s Distance Festival this past July at Rockland Lake, a benefit for the Center for Safety and Change, by joining together for the Montefiore Nyack Hospital 28^th Annual Blow Away Breast Cancer 5K Run-Walk.

It will be held through Nyack’s streets, a scenic route to be followed from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 14.

Please consider joining us in the event – and helping us spread the word. Even if you can’t take part on that day, we’d be grateful if you consider a donation.

It’s going to be a great way to not only support a most important cause – but also give us added incentive to get out and exercise with a great group of people.

HAPPY LABOR DAY FROM MARIA LUISA

Wishing all of you a happy, relaxing, refreshing and most of all, fun Labor Day.

It’s the day to step back and really take it easy after the long hot summer.

Savor the best memories from the past couple of months, from barbecues to birthday gatherings, perhaps a blowout Memorial Day weekend or some exciting Fourth of July fireworks.

Maybe there were some memorable trips, to the beach or to a family reunion – or just those simple stretches of time when all that was on the agenda was… not much of anything – now that is bliss!

We hope the summer – yes, officially still with us, though many consider Labor Day its end – has been a good one for you and yours.

We also hope you’re ready for all that autumn will bring.

MARIA LUISA DOES LABOR DAY WEEKEND – BIG!!!

 Yes, we know… Labor Day is not the official end of summer.

But for most everyone, it sure seems to mark the end of the “playful” season.

It doesn’t have to, though – and here at Maria Luisa, we have plenty planned for Labor Day weekend (and beyond) to keep the fun going.

Maybe you’ve got a big backyard blow-out planned for the holiday – or are getting out of town for a long weekend (lucky you!). Stop by our shops for fashions, accessories (beach towels and totes), home goods and of course, hostess gifts that will ensure you’re invited back again and again.

The best part? There’s still time to qualify for our official Summer Raffle. We kicked it off in July and continuing through the end of August, earn tickets through in-store purchases at both Maria Luisa Boutique and ML by Maria Luisa. Prizes will be drawn on Labor Day weekend and may include anything from a $50 gift card to a Maria Luisa T-shirt, a certificate for 30% off any item to a signature Maria Luisa drinking glass. Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show

As mentioned, Labor Day might seem like the end of the fun but it’s actually leading right into some great happenings that include the SeptemberFest Street Fair (Sept. 9), which will this year feature a teaming up of the Nyack Chamber of Commerce with Montefiore Nyack Hospital to include a Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show – yes, we are participating – from noon to 1 p.m. There’s also another edition of the Famous Nyack Street Fair set for Oct. 7; the blockbuster Nyack Halloween Parade Oct. 27 – and an autumn Sidewalk Sale (details coming).

And a friendly reminder, as it’s on a Monday, our shops will be closed on Labor Day itself.

BACK TO SCHOOL = A FRESH START

Funny, but no matter how many years we’ve officially been out of school, this time of the year is always “back-to-school” season.

Sometimes it’s literal. We might be heading back for additional training, have a child who’s about to start a new grade or new school or maybe even are a teacher ourselves.

But more often, it’s just the sense that come September, it’s time to embrace a fresh start, get a little more “serious” about things we need to do – and start to look forward to a productive autumn and wonderful holiday season (yes, that will be here soon, too).

There’s also always that feeling that back-to-school is the time for new things, from a handy notebook or journal (to finally get organized) to an addition or two (or more) to the wardrobe.

Here at Maria Luisa Boutique and ML by Maria Luisa, this is the time of year when we’re also welcoming the first of our fall fashions, footwear and accessories. Some have been arriving for the past few weeks, while others are due any day and will continue to arrive in coming weeks. We recently spent several days at NY NOW, a mega-trade show at the Javits Center in Manhattan, searching for unique and meaningful things to bring into our shops – which, again, are arriving soon. We think you’re going to love what we’ve chosen – and can’t wait to see your reactions.
